Revolutionizing last-mile delivery in Kenya

Bawbab DAI Project

Team Techify collaborated with Bawbab Technologies to develop a cutting-edge solution that addresses the last mile delivery challenges in Kenya's eCommerce industry

01.

Overview

Imagine living in a world where receiving a package meant that you had to rely on vague directions and landmarks to guide the delivery driver to your doorstep. This is the reality for many people in Kenya, where the lack of formal addresses makes accurate delivery a challenging and often frustrating process. With the rise of e-commerce, there is a growing need for a solution that simplifies the delivery process and enhances the overall customer experience. Leveraging remote sensing images and mapping platforms, a robust digital addressing infrastructure can be created. We created a webapp that uses GIS technologies like Google Plus Codes and Google Maps, coupled with an efficient front-end and backend design, and an intuitive UX. By conducting thorough UX research and utilizing technology (React.js and Django), UX design and product management, we created an MVP prototype to solve this problem.Using our solution, end-users can generate digital addresses which will be mapped with their homes/businesses, which they will be able to use to order packages. This mapping will also enable delivery drivers to accurately reach the destination through optimized routing.

Our Actions

Our team consisted of talented professionals from various disciplines, including backend software development, UX design, UX research, and product management. Together, we leveraged our expertise and worked synergistically to create an impactful Minimum Viable Product (MVP) as a proof of concept.

Software Development

Our software developers focused on building a robust Django backend system, incorporating essential features such as user registration, authentication, geocoding, reverse-geocoding, and plus code calculation. They collaborated closely with the UX designers and researchers to ensure technical feasibility and seamless integration of the backend with the frontend.

UX Research

We delved into market research to gain valuable insights into the challenges and dynamics of the eCommerce and delivery industry in Kenya. We conducted competitive analyses and brainstormed the user flow for the Bawbab app. We extended our support to the research team in Kenya, providing user research guidelines and facilitating user interviews to gather first-hand information from various user personas.

UX Design

We crafted an intuitive user experience for part-time drivers, who are vital in achieving efficient last mile delivery. We meticulously designed the driver's user flow, created wireframes, and presented design options to the team. We gained cultural insights into drivers' needs in Kenya, ensuring the design catered to their specific requirements. Together, we established a design system and style guide, fostering consistency and cohesiveness in our product's visual identity.

Product Management

We engaged in efficient communication with stakeholders, understanding their business goals and translating them into actionable items for the software and design teams. We collaborated closely with the sponsors, as well as Team IMUX, to define and negotiate the project scope. Furthermore, we developed a comprehensive roadmap for the MVP and documented tasks for the tech team members, ensuring that the project stayed on track.
